Traveling in Mongolia is certainly much safer than you think. Of course, there are places where you have to be careful, such as the black market in Narantuul where pickpockets will be happy to pick your pocket or some ger districts where it is recommended not to hang around too much at night. But in the steppe, things are very different. Pitch your tent near a nomadic family's camp and you will immediately feel adopted. Thieves are not the biggest dangers that await travelers; rather, they are road accidents. And since there are not many cars on the Mongolian tracks, safety seems to be much better than in other places. Still, be careful on the asphalt roads where many drivers drive while drunk.
