A Perfect Escape for Riders Short on Time

For those who don’t have many days to spare but want to break free from Ulaanbaatar’s traffic and experience Mongolia’s vast open steppe, this short adventure is the ideal getaway. Leaving directly from Cheketours, we dive straight into off-road tracks — no need to head back into the city — and ride toward the sacred Zorgol Khairkhan mountain.

You’ll spend the night in a cosy tourist ger camp or stay with a welcoming nomadic family for a more authentic experience. On the return journey, we follow the Tuul River, where herder camps dot the landscape and horses roam freely.

This quick escape offers a powerful first taste of Mongolia’s wilderness — where the horizon never ends and time seems to stand still.

DAY 1: 130KM OFF ROAD

We head toward the Gobi Desert for a 130 km stage to Zorgol Khairkhan Mountain, a sacred granite formation rising 1,686 m in Töv Province. Located about 180 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, its ash-colored cliffs stand above green valleys fed by nearby streams, home to wildlife such as argali sheep and red deer. Ancient Mongolian soldier graves found in the area add a unique historical atmosphere to this remarkable site.

DAY 2: THE TUUL RIVER

We leave the vast silence of the Gobi Desert behind and ride north toward the open steppe, gradually approaching the fertile banks of the Tuul River — the major waterway that flows through Ulaanbaatar. As we get closer to these life-giving waters, the landscape transforms: the dry desert hues give way to greener pastures, herds multiply, and nomadic gers become a more frequent sight.

This stretch of the journey is a beautiful transition between two iconic Mongolian worlds — the arid Gobi and the vibrant steppe — where everyday life revolves around livestock, family, and the rhythms of nature.
