FAQ

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COME TO MONGOLIA

May to September is the best season to come, with the peak season in July for the Naadam festival. July and August are also the wettest months of the year but the warmest. You still will have many sunny days. Anyway, weather in Mongolia doesn't give much choice and is TOTALLY UNPREDICTABLE

VISA

Some citizens (such as US and Singapore) are no need to obtain tourist visa to Mongolia within 30 days. Most countries require a visa which can be easily obtained in an embassy.
We will supply an official confirmation letter (by email) for your visa application once you book a trip with us.
You can extend your visa for an additional 30 days relatively easily but only in UB. More informations: http://www.mfa.gov.mn/?lang=en

HOW CAN I PAY ? MONEY ?

You can pay in the currency of your choice based on the price of the euro. We don't accept credit card. IMPORTANT: Change your money in UB and bring cash to the steppe. Don't rely on ATMs outside the capital city.

IS THIS TRIP FOR YOU ?

This type of travel is for sporty people who are not afraid of adventure and the unknown. If you like physical exercise, nature and camping then you love traveling with a motorbike in the steppe. As you organize your own program, there is no risk of doing too much or too little. If you want to take a rest day in a beautiful place, it's up to you to decide.

DO I NEED VACCINATION AND HOW SAFE IS THE WATER TO DRINK ?

No vaccinations are required. The tap water in the cities is safe to drink, but mineral water is recommended.

FOOD

You will find shops in all villages. The choice is limited but sufficient - bread, tin cans, Chinese soups, eggs, biscuits, pasta, mineral water, beer.
There are no more than 2 days without stores so not really need to overcharge yourself in food. Some nomads can cook for you for a small fee

SLEEP

You can camp everywhere but it is better to choose a place near a family of nomads. You can enjoy the protection of their dogs during the night. Be careful not to choose an alcoholic family. Some families rent yurts to travelers for a small fee. Do not be shy to knock on the door of a yurt. You will be welcome and the nomads will always be delighted to let you plant your tent next to them. Some small gifts will always be appreciated: inflatable balloons, small soaps, perfume samples, cigarettes, lighters ..... This can be very pleasant if it is raining or if it is cold and you will have a relationship with the nomads. For those who want more comfort, they can choose to sleep in a tourist camp where they can enjoy a hot shower. Be careful, the rates are high: a minimum of 100 € for a couple including dinner and breakfast

DEPOSIT FOR THE MOTORCYCLE

You can leave your passport as a deposit or the sum of 400€ for each motorcycle which will be returned at the end of your trip. Rental and return of the motorbikes is done in Ulaanbaatar.

MOBILE PHONE CONNECTIONS

You can buy a sim card Mobicom or Unitel. You will have internet connection in all the villages. In the steppe, between these villages, pretend you are in 1995 and talk to each other.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME ?

Warm thin layers of clothing, waterproof jacket, good walking boots, sandals and a hat and/or headscarf to protect you from the sun and winds. Don't forget insect repellent, sun cream, lip-gloss and first aid kit (medicine for headache, cold, diarrhea, runny nose; bandages; any medicine prescribed for you ); all your camera equipment and binoculars and perhaps some snacks to eat between meal times.

HOW MUCH LUGGAGES CAN WE PUT ON A SHINERAY AND CAN 2 PEOPLE TRAVEL ON IT.

It is quite possible to travel as a couple on the same bike. You just have to learn to travel light and to take only the absolutely necessary things. The less you take with you, the better. Mongolians can load their bikes up to the maximum. It is better not to follow their example and to travel light.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF MECHANICAL FAILURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STEPPE

First thing not to do is to panic. Then you can light a cigarette, have a drink and look around. Nomads should appear quickly on their horses or motorcycles and ask what is your problem, which means that this is the end of yours. Except in the desert of the Gobi which is, as its name suggests, deserted, this is the scenario that should be offered to you. A nomad can disassemble a Shineray engine at night and in the middle of winter and will be happy for a little money to help you out.
